The 10th Jelgava open winter swimming championships “Jelgavas Roni Cup 2018”
1st stage of the Winter Swimming World Cup
- Purpose and mission
To gather together Latvian and international winter swimmers, continuing an annual tradition. Advocacy for winter swimming, as a method of hardening of the human body. Improve collaboration between the clubs and groups both in Latvia and internationally, collaboration with the Government, public and commercial organizations. Promote hardening and winter swimming for residents of Latvia.
Determine the best individual swimmers and teams of Latvia to participate in the 15th Latvian winter swimming championships, which will take place in Liepaja on the 26th January, 2019.
The championship is open for participation of athletes from any country.
- Time and Place
The championship will run in two stages – on November 2nd at 12:00 p.m. and on November the 3rd at 12:00 p.m. in Jelgava city, on the River Driksa, in between the «Driksas» and the «Mītavas» bridge, near the restaurant “Pilsētas Elpa” (Pasta sala-1) and tea-house “SILVA” (Pilssalas str-2A). The pontoon pool will be set up with 8 – 10 lines (length 25m) and the start and finish constructions (see in attachment nr.4 “The Championship Location”).
The championship is organized by club – public organization «Jelgavas Roņi» in cooperation with the club – public organization “Jelgavas Jahtklubs JJK”, with support of the city’s Government, it’s institution «Sporta servisa centrs», and with support of International Winter Swimming Association.
- Members and login
Participation is open to all interested persons, both Latvian and foreign swimmers who complete and submit an application form online registration and consolidate it with signature that corresponds to the state of health of swimming in ice water (0.. +5 C) and for the state of health during the championship each is personally liable.
Participants under the age of 16 years requires the presence of the parents, who must also sign the application for the participation. Member who will be the first time to take part in the winter swimming championship can only complete one swim.
Championship consists of two stages divided into 16 distances:
2nd November (1st day)
1.distance. 50m freestyle with a time control (in 13 age groups for women) starting with the oldest women’s group;
2.distance. 50m freestyle with a time control (in 13 age groups for men) starting with the oldest men’s group;
3.distance. 100m freestyle with time control (in 13 age groups for women) starting with the oldest women’s group;
4.distance. 100m freestyle with time control (in 13 age groups for men) starting with the senior men’s group;
5.distance. 450m freestyle with time control (in 9 age groups for women) starting with the oldest women’s group;
6.distance. 450m freestyle with time control (in 9 age groups for women) starting with the oldest women’s group;
3rd November (2nd day)
1.distance. Relay 4 x 25m freestyle with time control (2 age groups: S1 – under 150, S2 – over 151);
2.distance. 25m “Head-Up” breaststroke with time control (13 age gr. for women) starting with the oldest women’s gr.
3.distance. 25m “Head-Up” breaststroke with time control (13 age gr. for men) starting with the oldest men’s group;
4.distance. 25m butterfly with time control (13 age groups for women) starting with the oldest women’s group;
5.distance. 25m butterfly with time control (13 age groups for men) starting with the oldest men’s group;
6.distance. 50m “Head-Up”breaststroke with time control (13 age gr. for women) starting with the oldest women’s gr.;
7.distance. 50m “Head-Up” breaststroke with age control (in 13 age gr. for men) starting with the oldest men’s group;
8.distance. “FOLK CLASS” – “Young Seals” – dipping in cold water;
9.distance. “FOLK CLASS” – “Seals” – swimming up to 25m – freestyle, no time;
10.distance. “FOLK CLASS” – “Polar Bears” – swimming up to 50m – freestyle without time control;
Award and closing ceremony.
(Depending on weather conditions and the number of registered participants, the organizers have the right to make changes to the program preliminarily notifying participants of the championship).

The full years shall be determined on the 31 October 2019 (in accordance with IWSA rules). IMPORTANT: The full number of years must be determined for person who was born in November / December!
“Folk Class” are winter swimmers both women and men of all the age categories (from A1 to J2) that will take part in “Young seals”, “Seals” and “Polar bears” races.
Team relay 4 x 25m freestyle, 2 age groups: «S1» 4 swimmer age sum ≤ 150 years and «S2» age sum ≥ 151 years.
Registration of competitors is online until November 1, 2018 at the www.jelgavasroni.lv .
Accreditation of participants will take place on 2nd and 3rd November, 2018, in the “Skating Arena Room” – Info Center “JR”, Pasta Island 1, Jelgava.

16:00 – 16:15 8th distance the “Folk Class” “Young Seals” – dipping in cold water;
16:15 – 16:30 9th distance the “Folk Class” “Seals” – swimming up to 25 meters – free style without time control;
16:30 – 16:50 10th distance the “Folk Class” “Polar Bears” – swimming up to 50 m – free style without time control;
17:00 – 18:00 Award and closing ceremony.
(Depending on weather conditions and the number of registered participants, the organizers have the right to make changes to the program preliminarily notifying participants of the championship. Due to the increase of the water level above the norm or drop level under the norm and the emergence of flows in the river, the championship «Jelgavas Roņu Kauss 2018 – JR Cup 2018» can be postponed!)
6. General Terms and Conditions
Swimmers outfit (see attachment Nr.1 “Swimsuit”) – the usual swimsuit, cap and swimming goggles.
Outfit of the swimmer should not be with a special technology of insulation Thermo and Neoprene.
No gloves, socks and/or shoes.
Before swimming stimulant drugs, alcohol, warming lubricants and ointment for the body cannot be used.
Start (see attachment Nr.2 “Start position”) – without jumping into the water, go in to the water to the bottom of the stairs or on the supporting step, hold on by one hand on the ladder. At the time of the start of the shoulders should be under water.
Finish – touching with the hand at the pool end wall (number board).
Swimming 25m, 50m breaststroke “Head-Up” (see attachment Nr.3 “Head-Up style”) – The only permissible stroke is “Head-Up” breaststroke. The crown (the top) of the head must not be submerged during the race, except before the first stroke of the start or turns (when water overflows through the head is permitted) – for all age groups, men-women, with time control. If the crown (the top) of the head submerges during the race, when it is not allowed, the swimmer will receive 5 second penalty that will be added to their race time.
Swimming 25 m Ice-Butterfly – for all age groups in the distance with time control, the swimming style is butterfly, the body should be kept on the chest, both hands simultaneously sliding forward above the water, both legs moving up and down at the same time.
Swimming 50m, 100m freestyle – for all age groups, men-women, with time control or without time control.
Swimming cap necessary! Tumble Turn is prohibited!
Relay swim – 4 x 25m freestyle – the team should be men-women (at least one woman or one men or 2+2). Swimming cap necessary!
Relay – the start of each subsequent swimmer only after hand swimmer touches the wall of the pool.
To begin it is necessary to swim after immersion in water on the stairs with one hand, holding the handrail, the shoulders should be under water before the start.
Participants in the composition may vary rooms prioritization swim, team name does not change.
The endurance swim – 450m freestyle with a time control (from 20 years old only – from B till J age category), swimming style – freestyle, indispensable water-tight swimming cap necessary and swimming safety buoy „Tow Float Buoy”, if the race is held in a pool, safety buoy is not a necessity, Tumble Turn is prohibited!
Swimmers of the endurance race will be admitted to the start only if accompanied by the Assistant – a trustee person who knows and is responsible for the swimmer, including guarantees his ability to overswim the dastance. The assistant must be able to provide the Swimmer with the necessary support after the swim until the swimmer is fully recovered.
The assistant must:
- follow along with the swimmer in the swim zone at the start;
- to be on the start zone during the entire swim;
- sign the judge to stop the swimmer’s swim in case there is a suspicion that the continuation of the swim threatens the life and health of the Swimmer;
- provide the Swimmer with the necessary support after the swim, until the full recovery.
All participants in the endurance race must undergo a medical examination on the day of the swim according to the Competition Program. Medical examination includes, but is not limited to, blood pressure, alcohol and drug tests. The results of the medical examination are not discussed and with negative indicators are grounds for refusal to admit the swimmer on the swim.
The organizers reserve the right to reduce the distance or cancel the endurance race if weather conditions become unpredictable and increase the risk of danger for swimmers. The decision is final and can not be discussed.
Judges have the right to stop the Swimmer’s swim in case there is a suspicion that the Swimmer is behaving inadequately and the continuation of the swim threatens his life and health.
Only participants who have previously participated in winter swimming competition for long distances, or the degree of hardening can assure club leaders or doctor with signed affidavit and must be sent to Organizing Committee.
Participants must consult and comply with the competition rules of safety.
If the participant sees that it is someone breaks the rules, should notify the Championship organizers or participants of the championship or the audience.
To avoid injury, it is necessary to comply with the rules to leave the pool or the hole immediately after the race.
“Folk Class” – no time control swims – “Young Seals” (quick dip), “Seals” (up to 25m swim) and “Polar Bears” (up to 50m swim).
Records – For the World records registering in all age groups and all distances, sanctioned by the International Winter Swimming Association (IWSA) the length of the pool will be equal to 25 meters with a blunder of ± 5 centimeters. The act of acceptance of the pool will be signed by the chief judge of the competition, members of the technical Committee and approved by the president or board members of IWSA.
Protest – should be submitted in writing to the organizers within 15 minutes after the race result, when you make a deposit of 50 Eur. If the protest is satisfied, then the deposit will be returned to the applicant.
- All “Folk Class” participants receive a diploma and a championship commemorative medal after their swim.
- Every 1st, 2nd and 3rd swimmer in every time control race and every age and gender group receives the diploma and a medal of the Jelgava Open Winter Swimming Championship. (In the Open Championship «Jelgavas Roņu Kauss» in the first three place winners in each category will be awarded with diplomas and medals at the final event of the championship.)
- The 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in the relay between teams will be awarded with diplomas and medals, and the 1st-place team in the group S1 and in the group S2 will receive “Jelgavas Roņu Kauss” cups.
- The 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in the race for 25m breaststroke «Head-Up», 50m breaststroke «Head-Up», 25m Ice-butterfly, 50m freestyle, 100m freestyle with time control in all age groups will be individually awarded with diplomas and medals.
- The 1st, 2nd and 3rd places in the 450m heats with a time control in 9 age groups will be individually awarded with diplomas and medals.
- Every country’s best swimmer results will be picked up (according to the IWSA rules and poins system) and compared with other countries, winning team (country) will receive a “National Cup”.
- The fastest swimmers may receive surprises gifts in each discipline.
- All participants will receive commemorative certificates for their participation.
Each participant with a time control, included in the list of results from 1 to 15 places, will receive the corresponding number of points counted to the table of results of the Winter Swimming World Cup (according to the rules of the World Cup IWSA).
